Bear Peark
No one met me this morning at NCAR. That was okay. I had my iPod to keep me company. Now why would no one show up for the scramble this morning...? Could it have been the snow and ice plastered all over the rocks and trails? Maybe. It certainly wasn't the reasonable 6:15 a.m. meeting time. Maybe it was the 19-degree temperature? Who knows. Wimps.
I ran/hiked Bear Peak from there, up and down Fern Canyon. I went up in around 58 minutes and did the roundtrip (around 2800 vertical feet) in 1h32m. Conditions were very slippery on the way up, but not because of ice. The snow was really slippery and unconsolidated, I guess because it has remained cold up there with no melting. It was warm down low yesterday so I was surprised by this. This made for pretty nice conditions on the descent, though. The snow coverd pretty much all the rocks and cushioned things nicely. It was slippery like skiing, but not like skating. No ice. So I could more along nicely on the steep descent.
I was home (working in Denver today...again) by 8:10 a.m.
